I recently finished reading Scalebound by Logan Piercey and absolutely enjoyed this mix of dragons, fantasy, and Tangled. It had a lot of plot twists, action, and magic, which I loved. The story pulled me in from the beginning, using unique concepts and cool magical abilities to draw the reader in from the first page. This book turned into a high-stakes adventure featuring fire magic, dragon companions, assassins, and wizards. Logan Piercey clearly put a lot of thought and heart into the overarching storyline and plot development.
That being said, I wish there would have been a little more character and plot development for this story. The book was great, but I feel like some areas could have used improvement. I struggled to connect with the main characters, as they felt a little flat and underdeveloped. There were also some major plot points that weren’t very realistic, especially the romance. There were definitely a few places that could have been refined.
However, this story was a budding adventure of creativity, spinning Tangled with Percy Jackson and How to Train Your Dragon. I liked the plot twists, and especially the addition of golden blood. (I thought they would use it to make money or something, though, not drink the golden blood.) There is a lot to enjoy about the premise of this book, and I was thoroughly entertained. I would love to see how this book grows if Logan Piercey makes a sequel!
If you are a fan of dragons, magic, fantastical diseases, romance, or all of the above, Scalebound is the right choice for you. Despite its challenges with execution, this story is an excellent and enjoyable read. I am excited to see where this story goes and look forward to the possibility of deeper character development in the sequel!
