Have you ever seen something so beautiful, you can’t breathe because it’s so amazing? I think this quote means that even though you could keep living in the same place forever, if you never do anything different, it’s not going to feel meaningful and like you’ve done something worth telling.
I think one of these special moments for me was when I went to a rope course for the first time. I was pulled up to the top of the rope swing, clinging to the two flimsy ropes that kept me from free-falling straight to the ground. I sat up there for what seemed like ages, rigid with terror and scared anticipation. I was unable to enjoy the height and vantage point that being up on the swing presented, but I only kept my eyes glued on the ground and waited to fall.
As the seconds passed, I grew more and more anxious. I was beginning to wonder whether the swing was broken because the people below were whispering and gesturing together. I was paralyzed, waiting for them to pull the ripcord that would send me catapulting to an unforgiving ground.
Finally, one of the operators called up to me. She said, “Will you look at the black box to your right? I need you to make sure nothing is tangled.”
The second I turned my head, she pulled the rip cord. I felt like one of those cartoons, where a character runs off of a cliff and doesn’t fall straightaway. I saw the ripcord pull the swing off of the rope that took me to the top, knew I was about to fall, and looked down. Time immediately began to fly again. I fell in a controlled swing, on the protective cables that served as a giant swing.
I was breathless, and at the moment, I couldn’t do anything but fly at a heart-racing pace. Then, at the top of my swing, I gasped in amazement, and I realized I was actually enjoying the ride. It was amazing to have the wind on my face and feel like I was a bird in the sky.
I’m super glad I decided to go on that swing. It was an amazing experience and even though the beginning was stressful, I found that I loved riding giant swings and wanted to go on every one that I could.
