There, They’re, and Their. These three words are Homophones. That means they sound the same, but each word’s meaning is different. Each of them has a specific meaning and place where they fit in. So many mistakes can be made with these three simple words, in writing and readability. How are you supposed to know which one to use in a specific case?
Starting with There. There is a preposition. That means it describes a position or place where a noun is. In a sentence, you could say, “There is the park”. While not wholly stating exactly where the park is, There uses context to suggest its location. A trick for remembering There is that it has the word Here in it. Here also describes a place, and is also a preposition.
Next, we move on to They’re. They’re is a contraction, when two words are shortened in form and are put together to form one new word. They’re is the shortened form of They are, and that is how it is used in speech. You can say, “They are going to the store”, and you can also say, “They’re going to the store”. They’re is an informal word, and is mostly used in passive conversations, although some formal contexts allow for its use.
Lastly, we have Their. Their is a possessive pronoun, meaning an object in question belongs to the subject in the sentence. Some other possessive pronoun examples include Hers, His, Mine, Yours, and Ours. While His or Hers proposes the fact that the object belongs to a single person, Theirs suggest the fact that multiple people own the item. You would use Their in a sentence to describe an object’s ownership. “The house was theirs, but they didn’t live there.”
